âAHHHAAA-HAAAAAA!â
We did have one Christmas family tradition, however, that I am fairly certain no other family kept. It may sound a bit odd today, but when our children were small, every one of them was a coffee drinker. Back then that was true of a lot of families. What made our coffee drinking different was that John loved coffee, the classic old Folgers âmountain grown, the richest kind of coffee.â He made an event out of drinking his first cup in the morning, and the children loved it.
So on Christmas morning, the children would get up first and brew a pot of coffee. Then they would gather around the kitchen table with great anticipation and wait for their daddy to join them. He would make his entrance in his thick terry-cloth bathrobe and house slippers, then pour himself a steaming cup of coffee.
John would lift the mug to his mouth, close his eyes, and take a long, slow sip, and then heâd hold the mug up in the air and smile the most delightful smile youâve ever seen. That was just the start! The children would sit on the edge of their chairs as John would take a deep breath and hold it; then he let out a sound that would have delighted any marketing and sales executives at Folgers. âAhhhaaa-haaaaaa!â It was perfect.
All of the children would laugh almost hysterically, and then they would take a sip of their cups and join together in one mighty âAhhhaaa-haaaaaa!â It was a wonderful scene that I never tired of watching.
In truth, John performed this same ritual every morning after his first sip of coffee. And the children laughed every time they were there to witness it. It wouldnât surprise me that all of our children, and even some of the grandchildren, make the same sound after their first sip of coffee each day.
